KOREANS WHO WENT TO GERMANY

Between 1963 and 1980, around 20,000 South Koreans came to Germany as guest workers. Some returned to Korea, but the majority stayed in Germany. As most of them were active as miners and nurses, the largest Korean community in Europe is located in the Ruhr area.

During his fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, South Korean artist Park Chan-kyong conducted extensive research, tracking the lives of the miners and nurses since their arrival in Germany and traveling with Klaus Fehling through the Ruhr area. His photographs and texts offer a profound insight into the completely newly established lives of these people. At the same time, the guest workers’ stories reflect the complexity and uniqueness of world history.
